Third time is a charm. At least, it is in the case of Science Records' own Greeley Estates. The Warped tour Vets are about to unleash their epic new album Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East later this month and we here at Under The Gun Review have come to tell you: buy this album. Whether you're a fan the band's previous efforts or jsut a fan of heavy rock, you're going to won't to start gathering your cash and finding a way to the record store because this is going to be THE album of the summer for you and probably a lot longer than that if I have anything to do with it.
Having not been overly familiar with Greeley Estates prior to this release arriving in the mail, I was quite interested in their sound. I had seen the promo shots of them covered in a strange black liquid looking a bit psychotic, so I instantly new there would be some chugging riffs and screams, but never did I expect too much. However, from the first 30 seconds of the opener, "Blue Morning," I knew that I was hearing something big. Greeley wastes no time breaking into a pounding snare lead drum beat with vocalist Ryan Zimmerman screaming, "I'm not a monster," as the guitars chug along. You can almost see the crowds at Warped this summer begin to swirl by the time the chorus kicks in. This is the lead single of the album and it's apparent why, because you're hooked from the one minute mark and feed off of anything Greeley will give you. The title track comes second and is one of the heaviest songs I've heard this year. Zimmerman sounds like a more mature, well tuned Sonny Moore [during the From First To Last era]and the rest of the bands pulses like a caged animal. Everything is tight and strong with very little room to rest. Everything cools down just a bit on, "If I could Be Frank, You're Ugly," and by cool down, i mean only for about one minute, before breaking into a soaring chorus. "Mother Nature Is A Terrorist," finds the band diving more into their use of electronics and not to reference FFTL again, but it did remind me of a b-side to Heroine, but even with that sound, the band manages to make it their own. As the album moves on, the band keep the fury strong on tracks like, "Let The Evil Go East," and, "I'll Have To Warn You, This Won't Be Quick," but there seems to be a lack of that factor which makes them stand out as anything more than filler songs. That's not saying they're bad, they're jsut not something that initially grabs you. There's real single potential for, "There's Something Wrong with The World Today," which brings to mind old Underoath, but with a heavy twist on Greeley Estates seems to be able to produce. The album finally comes to a close on, "You're Just Somebody I Use To Know," which may be the band's most epic song to date. It begins heavy with breaks between singing and screaming all laced with chugging guitars and pounding drums then moves into a soaring chorus, a guitar solo, spoken word bridge, and then back to the soaring chorus. It's grand, loud, and the perfect note to end an already impressive album on.
These days, it seems a lot of bands have one solid release in them before they fall off into obscurity, but not with Greeley Estates. Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East is their 3rd studio release and one of the most solid releases to come out this year. In a genre where bands with sing/scream style and tight jeans are a dime a dozen, Greeley Estate have separated themselves as something special and unique. This album was made for going crazy and singing along to every word and Greeley has exceeded in hitting those targets perfectly. If you love breakdowns, but still want a soaring chorus and real guitar work, you have just found your summer soundtrack.
