So far on Under The Gun I have stuck to Hardcore/Metalcore bands for my reviews, but James encouraged me to try reviewing a different style and I am glad he did. I was a bit unsure of what to expect from a rapper named Skillz, but he indeed has some skills, and apparently some tricks in his million dollar backpack.
When I first started listening to the album, I was highly impressed right from the first real track (“Where I Been”) all the way to the very last track (“Preachin To The Choir”). The first thing that really stood out about Skillz was his style. He can free style extremely well and has a unique sound on every track on this album. Another thing that really stood out when I first started listening to the album was his lyrics. A lot of rap that has recently been released seems to lack quality lyrics. It all seems like they are rapping about the same thing, but Skillz lyrics are all well written and cover original topics and thoughts. This is impressive to me because unlike most of the rappers out there he can actually come up with topics on his own.
My personal favorite track on the entire album was the last track “Preachin To The Choir.” The only thing didn’t like about the track is that it ended. The entire track is phenomenal; it has the best lyrics I have heard in a song in a long time. They actually have a meaning and tell a story throughout the track. The beats fit the theme and mood of the song perfect. This track is perfect.
Another track that I really enjoyed off this album was “I'm Gon' Make It.” I really enjoyed the message and way he expressed himself in this song. It showed how driven he was, how much potential he has, and how much effort he is going to put into making his music so he can live off it as an income. I was pretty impressed with this track because his lyrics are about making it big and he doesn’t sound cocky like all those rappers that are writing about all their money and possessions.
“Hold tight” was another fantastic track. I also really like the message behind this track, but my favorite thing was the beats. Once again he impressed me with his style and the way he delivers each and ever line. The song has a pretty decent tempo and would be good to bump.
I was really impressed by Skillz to say the least. It gave me hope for the rest of the genre and showed me that rap still had some unique talent left and originality. This album is rejuvenating the pool of mainstream rap that everyone seems to be singing along to. There wasn’t a bad track on this album, there was loads of variety, and every single song was original. I would really enjoy seeing someone as talented Skillz to become popular, so go buy this album and support his efforts in trying to save an almost lost genre.
